Decoding CYC Weights
Understanding the Standard Yarn Weight System (SYWS) is the foundation of successful pattern modification and yarn substitution.
The Categorization Logic
The Craft Yarn Council (CYC) established a numbered system from 0 (Lace) to 7 (Jumbo). This system is designed to group yarns not just by their physical diameter, but by their intended project gauge.
Standard Gauge Reference
| CYC Category | Rec. Needle | Knit Gauge (4") |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - Fingering | 2.25mm – 3.25mm | 27–32 sts |
| 2 - Sport | 3.25mm – 3.75mm | 23–26 sts |
| 3 - DK | 3.75mm – 4.5mm | 21–24 sts |
| 4 - Worsted | 4.5mm – 5.5mm | 16–20 sts |
| 5 - Bulky | 5.5mm – 8.0mm | 12–15 sts |
Wraps Per Inch (WPI)
When the label is missing, WPI is the gold standard for identification. By wrapping yarn around a ruler and counting how many strands fit in one inch, you can mathematically determine its category.
The "Halo" Effect
Fibers like Mohair or Angora have a "halo" that takes up more visual space. These are often categorized as Lace weight but worked at a Sport or DK gauge to allow the fibers to bloom.
Expert Tip: Swatching for Density
Always measure gauge after blocking. Fibers like superwash wool or linen will expand or "settle" significantly once the tension from the knitting process is released and the fibers interact with water.
